On a rainy day, it rains all day long. The sky is overcast with clouds.  The sun is not seen. Sometimes, gusty wind blows with rain. Rivers, canals and tanks swell up. Roads and paths get muddy and slippery. Water stands here and there. Normal life is disrupted due to heavy rain. The common people cannot attend their respective places in time. If anybody wants to go outside, he has to take an umbrella with him. The poor and the day laborers do not like a rainy day. They cannot go out to earn.  Their suffering knows no bounds. They go on starving. A rainy day is most welcomed to the students, as they have no classes in the school. People pass the day listening to music, watching TV, reading novels. A rainy day has a good effect on the soil. It helps plants to grow, flowers to bloom and nature looks fresh and beautiful. However, a rainy day is not pleasant to all.

Good health is wealth. To be healthy we must maintain proper hygiene. Hygiene helps us to be fit and disease free. There is difference between health and hygiene. Health can be defined as a fit body and hygiene refers to daily activities done for improving health. Good hygiene will help you to be more confident, happy and physically fit. Good health is obviously more valuable than money. A person can earn money at any time but if health is ruined it is really difficult to get it back. So, it is important to cultivate the habit of hygiene to lead a healthy and happy life. Human body and mind are inter-related. So to be mentally happy we should be physically fit. If we can develop the habit of hygiene in our day to day activities we can hope to live a long and happy life. Good food, pure water and cleanliness are the most important things to maintain personal hygiene. One should put emphasis on these three things. In keeping good health we should put emphasis on cleanliness. Regular bathing, washing hands before and after taking food, brushing teeth, washing clothes, trimming nails are some ways to maintain cleanliness. In fine it can be said that hygiene is really important to lead a happy and healthy life.

    A Street Hawker

A street hawker is a small businessman. Street hawker is a common and familiar person in our society. He is seen everywhere. He is seen in towns, cities, bus stations, railway stations and even in villages. He sells toys, books, vegetables, fruits, onion, garlic, cosmetics, sweets, chocolates, ice-cream, chanachur, clothing, fancy goods, newspaper, crockeries and what not. Some street hawkers carry their things in their hand and some other use two or three-wheelers (van) to carry their products. A street hawker is very much intelligent. He knows well how to convince a customer. He knows very well how to draw the attention of the people. He shouts in an attractive voice by uttering the name of the things he sells. Most of the things he sells are cheap. A street hawker is a part and parcel of our society. Though he works hard from dawn to dusk he is not well off and leads a very miserable life.

Shaheed Minar

          21^st February or Shaheed Day or

     International Mother Language Day

21st February is the International Mother Language Day. The day was proclaimed International Mother Language Day by UNESCO. This day has a bloody background. It was 1952. The then Pakistani government planned that Urdu would be the only state language of Pakistan. But Bangla was the mother tongue of 56% of the Pakistani citizens. Although the Bengalees protested the plan, the government declared Urdu as the only state language. The protest finally reached a more violent stage. The government declared section 144 to stop the movement. But our valorous students violated it and brought out a procession. Near Dhaka medical college hospital, the police fired upon the protesting crowd. Salam, Barkat, Rafique, Jobbar, and some other students died on the spot, and the situation became more violent. At last, the government was compelled to declare Bangla, along with Urdu as the state language. The Central Shahid Minar was built on the place where the students were shot dead. Every year the day is observed solemnly. People decorate the Shahid Minar with flowers and show respect to the martyred souls. Seminars and cultural functions are held. Special TV and radio programs are arranged. People also pray to the creator for the martyrs. The day is observed all over the world as International Mother Language Day.

National Flag Of Bangladesh

  Victory Day

16^th December is the victory day of Bangladesh. After nine-month-long bloody war we snatched away the victory on this day from the Pakistani rulers. In the general election of 1970 Awami League achieved a landslide victory. But Bhutto the leader of Pakistan People’s Party and Pak military did not hand over the power to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the leader of the winning party. Rather they were engaged in a conspiracy to stop the voice of Bengali people. On 7^th March 1971 Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered a historic speech in Dhaka in a gathering of millions of people. He announced a civil movement calling for “every house to turn into a fortress”. The speech inspired the Bengali people to prepare for a liberation war. On the night of 25^th March, the Pakistani army swooped on the innocent people of Dhaka and started mass killing. The Bengali people also fought back and started to fight with the Pakistani army. Pak army showed their utmost atrocities by killing thousands of people, looting, raping and setting fire to the houses of innocent people. On 16^th December 1971 Pak army was compelled to surrender. In the afternoon of 16^th December Pakistani army signed in the surrender paper in Dhaka. Hearing the news of the surrender of Pakistani army people from all walks of life came out from their house to celebrate the victory and thus a new country Bangladesh came into being in the map of the world. Thousands of freedom fighters and three million civilians sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh. Each and every year Bangladesh observes 16^th December as victory day in a befitting manner.

Environment pollution

Nature, land, air, water and all other things around us in which we live are called the environment. Environment pollution means a remarkable change in chemical, physical and biological characteristics of the environment. Environmental pollution is a serious problem in our country. In our cities, the air is constantly being polluted by smoke from factories and from carbon-dioxide gases emitted from motor vehicles. The ground we walk on in both urban and rural areas is being polluted by uncollected garbage. Water is being polluted particularly as a result of untreated sewage. Industrial waste and insecticides alarmingly pollute water. Another important pollution is sound pollution. We have noise from motor vehicles, mills and factories, aircraft, domestic appliances, radio, TV, soundbox, and so on. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we take are not always absolutely pure for health. When people drink or take a bath in the polluted water, they are attacked with stomach and skin diseases. Environment pollution may be controlled by taking different measures. We may increase afforestation. If trees are planted in large numbers, we can get benefit in different ways. Trees also increase rainfall and prevent air pollution by absorbing carbon dioxide. Laws should be passed to prevent factories from dumping wastes. Moreover, every conscious individual and institutions should come forward to solve this problem for the sake of our safe existence on earth. Environmental pollution leads us to the way of death. So, to live a happy and healthy life, environment pollution must be checked. And for this, effective steps should be taken immediately.

Tree plantation means planting more trees in a planned way. It is very essential for our survival on earth. But we are cutting down trees recklessly and thereby endangering our own lives.  The world's temperature is getting warmer gradually. Plantation of trees is thus a crying need of the time. Other than the aforesaid issue, trees come to our help in many ways. Trees take carbon-dioxide, give us oxygen and prevent air pollution. They also give us shelter, shade, wood, foods and fruits etc. They help our environment in many ways. They prevent soil erosion. They make our land fertile. They save us from droughts, floods, cyclones etc. They prevent our region from becoming a desert. Without sufficient trees, there will be less rainfall in the country. The climate will be hot. Different kinds of natural disasters will hit our world. People will suffer from the shortage of food, shade and oxygen birds and animals will lose their habitats. There will be no ecological balance. A country should have at least 25% forest lands. But there are no sufficient forest lands in our country. So necessary steps should be taken to have more trees. People should be more conscious about planting more trees. The mass media like TV and Radio can play a great role in this regard. To lead peaceful life, we have to plant more trees. In our country, July and August at the suitable time for planting trees. During that time we should plant more and more trees. If we don't plant more trees our existence will be no longer in the world.

   Our school library

A school library is a place where different types of books are kept for students and teachers to read or to borrow. School library is a part and parcel of a school. No school is complete without a library. Our school has a rich library. It is housed in a separate building. It is large and spacious. It is also well furnished. There are three big rooms in it. The two rooms are reading rooms, boys and girls have separate rooms. In the other room, books are arranged in almirahs and shelves in rows. There are separate almirahs and shelves for books on separate subjects. Besides textbooks, we have books on travel, history, biography, geography, novels, science fiction, poems, etc. in the almirahs shelves. Our library has a huge collection of books on various subjects and topics. The library has more than 5000 books. In the library, there is also a librarian. She helps us find out the books to our needs. In the reading room, we sit and get absorbed in books. We also collect books from the library to take home and keep with us for a certain time. These books are issued against our library cards. Only two or three books are issued at a time. But in the reading room, we are allowed to read as many books as we can. There exists a calm, quiet and serene atmosphere in our library. We are greatly benefited by the library. We can enrich our knowledge by reading books in the library. Our school library remains open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on holidays. Our school library is a great attraction to us. Whenever we get a chance, we hurry there and have a glance at the books of varied interests. We are greatly proud of our school library.

National Flag of Bangladesh

 Our National Flag

Every nation has its own national flag. It is the symbol of independence and sovereignty of a free country. Bangladesh is also a free country. So, Bangladesh has a national flag of her own. We feel proud of our national flag because it means that Bangladesh is a free and sovereign country. It reminds us of the valiant struggle of our freedom fighters to set the country free. Its shape is rectangular having a proportion of 10:6. It is of different sizes according to its use. The flag is hoisted every day on the top of our important government building and educational institutions. It is hoisted everywhere on the occasion of the Independence Day and the victory day. The national flag is kept half-mast on the occasion of national mourning days. There are two colors in our national flag. They are green and red. The green is the symbol of the youth and the red is the symbol of the sacrifice of the freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the freedom of our country. I feel very proud of my national flag because whenever I see the national flag it reminds me that I am a citizen of a free country. We can uphold its honor and dignity by doing our national duties properly.

Among all hobbies gardening is a great hobby. My favorite hobby is gardening. I have a beautiful and attractive garden in front of my house. Every evening I water the plants of my garden. My parents also help me in my gardening. There are rose, sunflower, kamini, Tuberose, China rose, Marigold, Bely etc. In my garden. There are also a few vegetable plants in my garden. The vegetables are Ladies finger, Brinjal, green chili, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Tomato, Lettuce etc. Right now, my garden is my most favorite place. I invite my friends to visit my garden. Whenever they see my garden they become very happy. As I am a nature lover, I love my garden very much and I dream to make my garden more beautiful and bigger. We can search our friends in Facebook by typing their name, when people become friends, they can see information about their Facebook friends and can send message through messenger. A popular feature on Facebook is to share photographs. A person can make a video call to anyone of his friend list even to someone who is not in friend list. Nowadays we can boost our business by promoting our business page or post through Facebook. For boosting any post we have to pay money to the Facebook authority. The increased greenhouse effect is causing a change in our planet that can affect our lives. The Major Gas, Carbon dioxide, emitted naturally and by the burning of fossil fuels, stays in the atmosphere a long time. Its warming effects occur even when the sky is clear and dry. The adverse effect of the greenhouse is very disastrous. It is feared that by the midcentury the world temperature will increase 4 degrees Celsius. The polar ice caps have started to melt. The sea level is rising. Consequently, the lower regions of the world will go under the water, and the southern regions of Bangladesh will also go under water. This catastrophic disaster must be checked. It is to be done to save our existence.

In fact the common pastime of both village and city people is watching TV. I live in Dhaka city and I am a student. My favorite pastimes are reading books, watching TV and listening to music. Generally the person who pulls rickshaw is called rickshaw puller. A rickshaw puller is a familiar figure in our country. He is seen with his beautiful rickshaw in cities, towns and villages. He lives in a slum and his house is worn-out. He wears a shabby dress. Through much hardship, a rickshaw puller somehow supports his family. He does not have his own rickshaw. He hires a rickshaw from someone for half-day or for full-day. He earns money with much hardship and by the drops of his sweat. He drives rickshaw from dawn to midnight. He is always seen in the street whether the weather is fair or foul. In summer, he gets burnt in the sun and in the rainy season he gets drenched in the rainwater. Even in the biting cold of the winter season, he remains in the street to give us his valuable service. In fact, a rickshaw puller is our all-weather friend. Though he works hard he leads a miserable life. Whenever he becomes sick the members of his family have to starve. Our government should introduce social security system to support the working people like rickshaw pullers in their bad time.

In December, 2019 the novel coronavirus which is also called covid-19 broke out first in the Chinese city Wuhan of Hubei province. At first the scientists did not put much more attention to the virus. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that it was a general flu. But with the passage of time when the situation became worst and many people were infected by the virus and the number of people were died then the Chinese government and the world could realize the danger of the situation. The Chinese government cut all sorts of communication with Wuhan city with the rest of the country. Realizing the reality WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic. The virus spread out all over the world very fast. The virus has spread to at least 177 countries. Within a couple of months, the virus has killed more than 600000 people and affected more than 14 million people. The COVID-19 pandemic is a great health crisis of our time and the greatest challenge we have faced since world war two. Countries are trying to slow down the spread of the disease by taking different measures such as, testing and treatment, quarantine of citizens, ban on traveling, canceling large gathering, closing schools, colleges and universities, canceling sporting events and concerts. People are losing their jobs and they do not know when the normality will return. Everyone is looking forward for an effective vaccine to fight the virus. Scientists all over the world are working day and night to find a way out by inventing a fruitful vaccine to fight against COVID-19. And it’s a good news for all of us that already some of the countries like the USA, Russia, China and Oxford University have invented a vaccine and the trial of their vaccine is in the final stage. People all over the world are looking forward to having an effective vaccine as soon as possible to put an end to the COVID-19 pandemic.

My favourite game

There are many kinds of games and sports in our country. Of all the games I like football most. It is a popular game all over the world. It was first played in England but now it is played in every country. My favourite football team is Brazil. I like football for some reason. It is not as costly as cricket. One does not need to spend much time playing the game. Again, it is played in a short time. It is more exciting than cricket. It thrills both the players and the audience. Football is an outdoor game. It requires a big field which is usually 120 yards long and 80 yards wide. There is a goal post at each end. The game is played between two teams. Each team has 11 players. There is a referee to conduct the game. The game starts placing the ball at the center of the field. The referee whistles and the game starts. Each team tries to pass the ball through the goal post of its opposition. The team which scored more goals wins the match. Football is an interesting game. It teaches us obedience. It also teaches discipline, co-operations and leadership. It is a good exercise. It improves the health of a player. Playing football has some risks. One may get hurt or injured. In spite of some demerits, football is a popular game all over the world. So I like it very much.

 My first day at school

My first day at school is the most memorable day in my life. In 2009 I was three years old. I can remember a very important event that happened then. That was my first experience about my first day at school. It was the 23 March 2009. On that day my mother took me to Uttara High School. I was somewhat afraid of finding myself in a new environment. My mother took me to the headmaster's room. The headteacher asked me my name and some easy questions. I could answer all of them. Then I was taken to the classroom at 10:00 am. The class teacher Mrs. Farhana Begum ma'am appeared before us. We all stood up and showed her respect. It was a 45 minutes class. All the time she treated us as her friends. She made fun with us. We all enjoyed the whole time very much. When the bell rang she left the class. I became familiar with some of the students. Really the day was very enjoyable. I will never forget the day.

 A railway station is a place where trains start and stop from. There is a platform for the passengers. Passengers get into and get down from the train there. The building of a station are generally made of red bricks. There are waiting rooms for the male and female passengers. In all the railway stations there are shed over the platform to protect people from rain and sun. A railway station has different office rooms to use for different purposes. There are restaurants, book stalls, tea stalls, newspaper stalls and stationary stalls here. A railway station is always a crowded place. Passengers come and go away. In big railway stations, people stand in a queue to buy tickets but in small stations they do not need to stand in a queue to buy tickets. When the train arrives, the station becomes a busy place, but when it leaves the station, it becomes calm and quiet again. The signalman moves his red and green flags to control the movement of the train. Train plays an important role in our communication system and that’s why railway station is also serves an important role in our rail communication system.

As for example, here we can mention Dhaka city. As Dhaka is a mega city the air of Dhaka is seriously polluted. Overpopulation is also a reason behind air pollution. We should lessen emission of carbon from mills and factories. To save our environment we all should plant more and more trees instead of cutting down them. Renewable energy is also known as green energy because it has no bad impact on our environment. We get renewable energy from sunlight, wind power, rain, sea wave, water (hydro power) etc. Coal and fossil fuels are example of non-renewable energy. Renewable energy doesn't harm or pollute our environment. On the other hand non-renewable energy emits carbon and causes pollution to the environment. We are consuming non-renewable energy very fast and the age of natural gas, coal and oil will come to an end very soon. So we should look for substitution of non-renewable energy. Scientists all over the world are trying to replace non-renewable energy by renewable energy. Though renewable energy has so many benefits but it is costly. Nevertheless, we hope in the near future through research renewable energy will be cheaper for us to use.

Trees give us oxygen, food, wood, shade and what not. People cut down trees for various reasons. We cut trees to expand our agricultural land and for our habitat. We also cut trees to make new road, to make furniture and to use as fuel. By cutting trees we are making a great harm to our environment. If we continue cutting down trees in this way, one day our world will turn into a desert. Trees keep our environment fresh by giving us oxygen and by taking away carbon-di-oxide. As we are cutting down trees in a large number, the amount of carbon is increasing in our environment. Carbon is responsible for the rise of temperature worldwide. So, we should not cut down trees without considering the bad impact of deforestation. Rather we should plant more and more trees.

Water is one of the most important elements of our environment. For the survival of all living beings water is a must. Water pollution is a great threat to the existence of all living beings. The word pollution is linked to the word contamination. Whenever there are harmful elements in the water we call it polluted or contaminated water. Polluted water is harmful to all living beings. Water pollution causes deadly diseases. Water pollution is a disaster for us. Water pollution leads to the destruction of all living beings of the world. Water gets contaminated in many ways. Whenever the waste of mills and factories mixes with river, sea or canal water, water gets polluted. Farmers use pesticides in their fields for farming. The pesticide is a common and serious ingredient to pollute water. Hospital waste is also the worst ingredient to pollute water. To save our world we must check all these pollution otherwise all the living beings of the world will be in jeopardy. So, we all should be careful about water pollution.

Traffic Jam

When vehicles stay in a long line for a long time and can’t move is called traffic jam. In cities and towns, traffic jam is a common issue. Because of traffic jam, we lose our valuable time every single day. Especially in the big cities of third world countries traffic jam is really unbearable. Bangladesh belongs to third world countries. Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh. Traffic jam is the part and parcel in the life of the citizen of Dhaka. Compare with vehicles and population the number of roads is not enough in Dhaka city. Even most of the roads are not enough spacious. As a result traffic jam kills our important time every day. Students cannot reach their school and colleges in time, patients cannot be taken to the hospital easily, firefighters can’t move fast only because of traffic jam and narrow roads. Besides, most of the vehicles are not fit and drivers are not properly trained. These vehicles and drivers cause traffic jam in the streets. Another reason for traffic is the unwillingness of maintaining traffic rules. Most of the pedestrians and drivers are indifferent to traffic rules. The pedestrians don’t use foot over bridge or footpath. The drivers park their vehicles here and there. By widening the roads and by constructing new roads traffic jam can be brought under control. Drivers and pedestrians also must follow the traffic rules. Our government should take effective steps to ease traffic jam.

Load Shedding

Load shedding is a daily common incident in our country. Load shedding means the suspension of the power supply for a certain period in a particular area. Load shedding occurs when the generation of electricity is less than the demand. Another reason for load shedding is illegal connection. Because of the shortage of electricity, the power authority tries to balance the supply of electricity. The authority cut the power supply in one area at a particular time and supply the electricity in another area. Hence, load shedding occurs in that particular area for a certain period. The area becomes dark and all the activities come to a standstill. Students can’t study, factory machines are stopped, activities of the hospital are also stopped, things inside refrigerator get rotten, domestic works also get stuck. Leading a normal life becomes a great problem because of load shedding. The problem is getting worse day by day, especially in rural areas. People of all walks of life are victims of load shedding. Load shedding affects the economy on a big scale. Our government has taken a lot of effective and fruitful steps to increase power generation to lessen load shedding. In cities, the situation has become developed. Load shedding now hardly occurs in big cities especially in Dhaka. Moreover, public awareness is also important to get rid of this problem. We all should be conscious of using electricity. We should switch off our fan, light and other electrical equipment when we are going out of the home.

Early rising is the habit of getting up from bed in the morning. It is a very good habit. It is essential and good for health.  The man who rises early in the morning can take some exercises or a walk in the morning fresh air. The morning air refreshes both body and mind. An early riser gets enough time to do his work either in study or in other work. As a result, the early riser becomes successful in his life.  An early riser has many advantages. He can start his daily works earlier. He can earn more and become wealthy. So the habit of early rising is the source of health, wealth and wisdom. That’s why there is a proverb that, Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

A Farmer

The person who does the work of farming is known as a farmer. In Bangladesh, the life of a farmer is not so good. He inherits a little land. Even most of the farmers do not have land at all. They work on others land and they are ill-paid. Generally, he is illiterate. He does not know how to cultivate his land scientifically. He has not enough money to buy seeds, fertilizer or pesticides. As a result, he cannot produce more food for his family and for the country. He gets up early in the morning, goes to his land and works hard from dawn to dusk. Because of his hard work we get food on our plate. If he gets a good harvest his face beams with joy. On the other hand, if the production of crops is not good, his sorrows know no bounds. Though he works hard he cannot lead a decent life. Our government should take steps for the welfare of the farmers to ensure their social security.

The name of my school is Dipshikha School. It is situated in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. There are seven hundred students and sixty teachers in our school. The classrooms of our school are beautiful and well decorated. There is a big and beautiful library in our school. Besides textbooks, there are various types of books also. There is a canteen inside our school campus. The school authority puts emphasis on the hygiene and cleanliness of the canteen. All the teachers of our school are very much friendly and helpful. They are highly qualified. They teach us with great enthusiasm and make the lessons interesting. They take great care of us. There is a big playground in front of our school. The result of our school is always good. I feel proud of my school. I love my school very much.

A Village Doctor

The person who gives medical treatment to the villagers is called village doctor. He is known to all the villagers. He is a popular and familiar person among the villagers. He is not well educated. He does not have any recognized certificate to be a doctor. That is why he is also called a quack. Generally, a village doctor gathers knowledge and experience by working under another senior village doctor. Some of the village doctors take part in different short training programs to learn medical treatment. Though he is not well educated he is sincere in serving the villagers. Villagers get him beside them whenever they need him. Even at dead of night, he responds to the call of villagers. The villagers address him, doctor, with love and respect. A village doctor sits in a medical shop in the village market. This shop is also called dispensary. In his dispensary, there are few chairs and a table for the patients and visitors. There is also one or two almirahs to keep medicines. His medicines are not expensive but common. He gives treatment to the patients with utmost sincerity but takes a little money from them. He is a simple and ideal person to the villagers. A village doctor is one of the best friends of the villagers.
